Post by ajohnstoneI'm happy to say that it is a complicated issue that cannot simply be put
down to lifestyles of either race or even income but overall that for
society as a whole our dietary habits are detrimental to our health.
Speaking as someone who is both obese and diabetic I don't dispute that.
I'm sure I would be much healthier and probably live longer if I denied
myself some of the pleasures in life but why would I want to.
A friend of mine was telling me about visiting a cadaver museum which I
think is in Minneapolis. I'm not making that up. He told me they had one
exhibit showing the lungs of a non-smoker and a smoker side by side. The
non-smoker's lungs looked to be in much better condition. I told him he
was missing the point. They were both cadavers. They ended up in the same
place.
Post by ajohnstoneI don't think you will be surprised that i place much of the culpability
upon the capitalist system.
I know I'm not surprised.
Post by ajohnstoneMuch of the unhealthy ingredients to our
diets are determined by the food corporations who construct our processed
foods.
And then the bastards come into our homes and jam all that unhealthy food
down our throats.
Post by ajohnstoneAnd one thing that drives our choices of what to eat is advertising
by the food industry. We eat junk food because it is a junk society. We
only need to see the levels of lobbying from the food corporations to
resist food regulation. The food industry have learned the Jesuit practice
very well ... get them young and you have them for life.
We have food regulation. Everyone gets to regulate what they put in their
bodies. Even as a kid, I refused to eat green beans.

But on today's news i read that over half of the Chinese are over-weight
and they don't get SNAP, do they?

We all make our own choices as to what we eat and how we weigh the
pleasure vs. healthy equation. Some people like to closely regulate what
they eat and are in excellent shape. They seem to have adopted the, "If it
tastes good, spit it out" philosophy. Then there are people like me who
are on the other side of the equation. I accept the risks associated with
what I choose to eat and I don't blame anybody else for my choices. I am
in all the high risk categories for Covid-19. Over sixty. Overweight.
Diabetic. If I get it, it's probably adios so I am taking all the
precautions I can. I had my annual check up last week and my doctor told
me once again I need to lose weight. OK, I'll try. I asked him about when
and how the vaccine would be available for me. He told me I would probably
be in the next high risk group after the frontline healthcare workers get
theirs. Now our idiot governor (Ohio) is saying he wants schools that
reopen to be next in line. As if the kids have much to worry about. Until
I get vaccinated, I'll be cocooning in my home, only going out to buy
essentials or to play golf. That is my choice. I am taking responsibility
for my own well being.
