Discussion:
High Quality Non-Skipping Version of Channel 2

Here is channel 2 of the Dallas Police Department's radio traffic from
November 22, 1963. Channel 2 was the channel used to coordinate special
events. This disc is the one being recorded when the President was
assassinated, at 12:30 pm.

This is something I’ve been working on and just finished. I
actually started doing this back in 2001 and that’s what led to
discovering that channel 2 had forward skips, which led to other
discoveries, and I never finished doing what I'd started out to do.

The base version is the tape copy made in November 1963 by the Dallas
Police. It is a digital copy of the tape held by the National Archives.
It is at this point the best quality version there is. But it skips and
has repeats. I speed corrected this to match the corrected speed of the
FBI version, which was made for the Ramsey panel by playing on a
phonograph and doesn’t have skips. It comes from Ramsey's files.
Repeats were removed, and forward skips were inserted by taking the
missing material from the FBI version. This was a very tedious process.
I did not alter the sound of either version so that you can audibly tell
when a piece of the FBI copy is inserted.

This process has produced the first intact, non-skipping, best quality
copy of the Audograph disc that was being recorded at 12:30 November 22nd,
1963.

Thank you very much, no matter which side you are on. Does Steve know
about this? This is where the InterNet newsgroup shines. This may be the
first new research done this century.

I have only a couple of requests.
In your reply to me can you copy the comments that you put on the
picture that appears when it is played on YouTube?
Can you help translate what you think some of the messages are which are
hard to hear or understand? I ASSuME that you have examined all the
transcripts we have made over the years.
Can you use one and correct it and add onto it new things? Then if you
could e-mail it to me I could put it on my Web site for everyone to
download or on your own site if you have one.

Now to technical issues.
Do you trust the FBI to have done an honest job handling the materials?
How would they know what to cut out or alter as part of a cover-up that
early?
Frequencies? Do you think your version is the closest to the true
freuencies as it happened? For example, are the voices sound correct for
each person? Can you tell what the true pitch of their voices?
If you can make a transcript of channel one is there any way to identify
what is the original message and then a skip forward or back?
What is the cause of some messages being hard to hear? Can you hear the
sirens? Can you compare the frquencies of the sirens on channel one to
channal 2?

picture that appears when it is played on YouTube?
It's a version of what I posted here. Probably could have done it better,
but posting this was actually a last minute decision. The video was made
in about half an hour. I intended do it later, when I'll also have other
things to post, but then I figured why not do this thing now? Anyway, the
text on the video follows:

----------------------

On November 22, 1963 the Dallas Police Department operated two radio
channels. Channel 1 was used for normal daily activity. Channel 2 was
used for special occasions, which on this day was the visit of President
Kennedy.

Channel 2 was recorded on a Gray Audograph dictation machine like the one
pictured here. The audio was embossed on a plastic disc. The audio you
are hearing comes from the disc that was recording when the assassination
took place.

Over the years a few versions of copies of this disc have been available.
None are perfect. When played back on an Audograph machine it had a
tendency to skip tracks and repeat tracks, like a poor record.

Another version was made by the FBI in 1981 by playing the disc on a
phonograph machine that would normally be used to play vinyl records.
This version didn't skip. But it didn't play at the correct speed, and
the audio quality was very poor.

The version you are hearing was made by speed correcting the FBI version,
and the best tape copy made from the Audograph machine. The Audograph
version was used as the base copy, all of the repeated parts were removed,
and missing parts from skips were inserted from the FBI version.

This produces the best available complete version of the Channel 2 disc
from the Kennedy assassination.

been very important to me. I know there are people willing to work on
that. If there are specific instances you have in mind I'd be willing to

able to do that is because of the quality of these copies.

How would they know what to cut out or alter as part of a cover-up that
early?
I think that's a fair question. I have notes about the session where they
made that copy and a copy of the dictabelt. It was done in view of a
number of people, and they simply played the media to tape. In both cases
they only copied part of the belt or disc. The physical recordings were
longer than the FBI tapes.

There's also nothing on that copy, or absent from that copy, that would
make any difference.
Post by Anthony Marsh
Frequencies? Do you think your version is the closest to the true
freuencies as it happened?
Yes. And there are surprises about that.

There is one reliable clock that establishes true speed. The power line
hum on the FBI copy of the Audograph disc. Because when they made that
copy that used a phonograph and not an Audograph, it was played back with
a linearly variable speed warp. Which means that the strong linearly
variable power line hum that is measurable there MUST be from when it was
recorded live. It can't be anything else.

I used that hum to correct the speed of the entire track to have a flat
60hz hum throughout. That track then becomes the baseline to establish
the true speed of everything else. For example, the true speed of the
channel 1 dictabelt can be found by comparing common long broadcasts, like
the times the dispatcher simulcast on both channels. The true speed may
not be what people thought it was.
Post by Anthony Marsh
For example, are the voices sound correct for
each person? Can you tell what the true pitch of their voices?
If you can make a transcript of channel one is there any way to identify
what is the original message and then a skip forward or back?
What is the cause of some messages being hard to hear?
Depends. Some it sounds like they weren't received clearly. I'm not a
radio engineer and couldn't say much about that. But doing this I also
noticed that there are sometimes dropouts on the FBI copy where the signal
is very diminished. This is very audible when around 30 seconds or so
after the the shooting the sound quality drops drastically and stays that
way. But it happens earlier times too only for a few seconds. I hadn't
realized that before walking through this very slowly, comparing to the
Audograph version.

I think that means the phonograph had trouble playing the disc. It didn't
skip. But it didn't always pick up the full signal strength. I'd always
thought something happened to the tape after it was made, but now I don't.
Now I think it was produced that way.

Yes. And crowd noises and car horns and lots of ambient sounds.

Sonalysts already analyzed the sirens. I've got nothing to add to that.

hum on the FBI copy of the Audograph disc. Because when they made that
copy that used a phonograph and not an Audograph, it was played back
with a linearly variable speed warp. Which means that the strong
linearly variable power line hum that is measurable there MUST be from
when it was recorded live. It can't be anything else.
I used that hum to correct the speed of the entire track to have a
flat 60hz hum throughout. That track then becomes the baseline to
establish the true speed of everything else. For example, the true
speed of the channel 1 dictabelt can be found by comparing common long
broadcasts, like the times the dispatcher simulcast on both channels.
The true speed may not be what people thought it was.
Post by Anthony Marsh
For example, are the voices sound correct for each person? Can you
tell what the true pitch of their voices? If you can make a
transcript of channel one is there any way to identify what is the
original message and then a skip forward or back? What is the cause
of some messages being hard to hear?
Depends. Some it sounds like they weren't received clearly. I'm not a
radio engineer and couldn't say much about that. But doing this I also
noticed that there are sometimes dropouts on the FBI copy where the
signal is very diminished. This is very audible when around 30 seconds
or so after the the shooting the sound quality drops drastically and
stays that way. But it happens earlier times too only for a few
seconds. I hadn't realized that before walking through this very
slowly, comparing to the Audograph version.
I think that means the phonograph had trouble playing the disc. It
didn't skip. But it didn't always pick up the full signal strength.
I'd always thought something happened to the tape after it was made,
but now I don't. Now I think it was produced that way.
Post by Anthony Marsh
Can you hear the
sirens?
Yes. And crowd noises and car horns and lots of ambient sounds.
Post by Anthony Marsh
Can you compare the frquencies of the sirens on channel one to
channal 2?
Sonalysts already analyzed the sirens. I've got nothing to add to that.
Michael
There was also a researcher from England who did some research on the
tapes.
I know more than one.

This process has produced the first intact, non-skipping, best quality
copy of the Audograph disc that was being recorded at 12:30 November 22nd,
1963.

claim that they can't even hear the crowd noise.

I've only heard the reverse. That since you can hear crowd noise you
ought to able to hear shots too, if they were there.

I consider both arguments invalid.

Only a caricature could be fishing for validation of the "Acoustic
Evidence" theory by attempting to elicit an observation that the crowd can
be heard by somebody else when he could just state that crowd can be
heard. But Marsh has to play the dissembler's game because he has no case.
He tries to manipulate others into making his case for him. The when he
fails, as he always does, he can launch into one of his intentional
misapprehensions and make everybody forget what the hell he was talking
about. He's very much like Donald Trump, only without a hit TV show and
the presidency and the granddaughter-wife.

Well, at least I can finally hear Patrolman Gross saying that the
dispatcher's mic is stuck. That's very faint on the recording I've been
using. Funny, Patrolman Gross can't tell a motorcycle's stuck mic from a
dispatcher's. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the Jefferson Tower
receiver having been shut off by the dispatcher for the open mic event.
Gross was far closer to that receiver than he was to the Stoneleigh Hotel
receiver, so when he called in to clear, the dispatcher and the Dictabelt
machine should have had no trouble hearing him, that is, if the Jefferson
Tower receiver had not been shut off. I'd ask Odellm what he thinks about
it, but I wouldn't want to upset him. And Marsh doesn't even yet
understand Clyde Haygood's black gloves, so he need not reply, either.
Yes, it's just me here. Maybe I'll respond if I feel like it.

actually started doing this back in 2001 and that’s what led to
discovering that channel 2 had forward skips, which led to other
discoveries, and I never finished doing what I'd started out to do.
This process has produced the first intact, non-skipping, best quality
copy of the Audograph disc that was being recorded at 12:30 November 22nd,
1963.

Now then, 19efppp, or Lovey Doo Doo, or whatever your name really is, I
could intentionally misunderstand you and say that you don't even know
what channel you're talking about, but I'll leave that to Marsh, if he's
up to it. Or I could be evasive and get insulted that you dared to intrude
upon my comfortable little realm, but I'll leave that to Odellm, so that
he can at least say something, if he likes.

What I find more interesting than your quaint observations about Patrolman
Gross and his communications problems is the coincidence of the open mic
event occurring at the precise moment of the assassination. This is severe
radio interference for about 2 minutes and it only happens right over the
assassination. This coincidence was not overlooked by early Official Story
doubters, as I have seen recently in the Harold Weisberg archives, but
none of our CT heroes has ever seriously dealt with it, it seems. I find
that very strange. In fact, the seem to have run with the idea that the
radio interference was a "fortuitous" event, because it allows us to have
a ridiculous Acoustic Evidence Theory hoax. Are our heroes actually
morons, or do they work for the sociopaths who who murdered the president?
I find this question far more interesting than your quaint observations
about how things were done. We need to forget about what happened on Elm
Street, and in the dispatch center, and sweep on the questions of higher
level treachery. Who cares that the Patrolman Gross comment about the
dispatcher's mic being stuck reveals the DPD involvement in the plot, when
we can argue about people who weren't even in Dallas when it happened. I
think that is far more entertaining, and I implore you to give it Doo
consideration, Lovey Dovey.

In the Research Of The Century, I can hear that Curry actually said, "Get
a man on top of that building-underpass! See what happened up there!" He
says both "building" and "underpass." I hadn't noticed that before. Now
that I know it is there, I can hear it on my other recording, though it is
not clear. Very perceptive of Chief Curry to notice both shooting
locations outside of the limo itself. No wonder he was a chief.

22 LL Hill is loud and clear here, calling in from Elm Street at 12:37.
Too bad Bugliosi did not have The Research Of The Century available to
him, else he wouldn't have said that that was 142 Clyde Haygood, who,
BTW Marsh, was wearing black gloves in Dealey Plaza and ran up to the
overpass. Of course, "22" is clearly audible on all of the recordings,
so maybe Vinnie's hearing aid was acting up when he checked out the LL
Hill situation. We'll never know, will we, now that Bugliosi has gone
to that great Amazon in the sky.

And of course I need to apologize to the poster for being interested in
the content of the recordings. I know that it is customary in these parts
to be more interested in how wonderful everything is and to praise
content-neutral postings of apparent researchers while ignoring matters of
content, but I just can't help myself. Maybe when he gets older, he'll
understand and post the long version of channel two, that is, if Steve
Barber doesn't beat him to the punch and post his long version recording.
But, I'll probably have to wait until it is released on VHS, or even Beta.

I know this is late for this thread, but I have some questions that
arose from the above page. I have mostly ignored the acoustic evidence.
What got my interest was a device that recorded to a disk by keeping the
stylus fixed and moving the turntable. It sounds so Rube Goldberg that I
thought there must have been some mistake because why would anybody do
that? Of course, it was all about keeping the linear velocity at the
stylus constant and thus maximizing the amount of record time on the disk.
This means that if a part of the disk is recorded on at two different
times, there will be two hum tones with different frequencies recorded
there. I suppose the AudoGraph was a clever design but they could have
just recorded on a cylinder.

I don't understand why there should have been less skipping when the disk
is played on phonograph. The Audograph constrains the stylus so why
should it skip more when the disk was played on it?

What was the playback speed of the turntable? I remember seeing
turntables with a 16 2/3 speed. I think it was that or 33 1/3.

I believe in that page you said the "hold everything" actually
came 61 seconds after the shooting and that would mean that events that
were 61 seconds apart would have been recorded on the same part of the
disk if the sounds on the disk actually came from the shooting. If that
really happened then there would have been two hum tones recorded there.
The frequency of the second tone would be about 2.5% less then the first.
At that point there should be two distinct hum tones, some sort of low
frequency interference pattern, or, if the second tone dominates, a
discontinuity in the hum graph.
I am assuming that, during the recording, the linear velocity at
the stylus was constant as intended. The phonograph, unlike the
AudoGraph, maintained a constant angular velocity so the linear velocity
at the stylus was proportional to distance from center but the radial
motion of the stylus was constant. It moved one groove width per
revolution. The elapsed time in the playback then represents the radial
distance on the disk from the beginning of the recording to the point on
the disk being recorded at that time. The time at which the hum frequency
is twice what it was at the beginning is twice as far from center as at
the beginning. Using the hum frequency line, I find the distance (time)
between the beginning of the recording and the point where the hum
frequency has doubled to be

A = 0.000406, B = 0.601909

2B = At + B or t = B/A = 1482.5

The center would then be at -1482.5. A simpler method is just to find
the x intercept, but that seems less obvious.
I will assume that for the first recording, the stylus was in the
proper position. If the second recording came 61 seconds in real time,
then it should have come 65 seconds later in playback time. The recording
of "Hold everything" came when the angular velocity was right to produce
the correct linear velocity at a position that was 65 seconds later (or
farther from center) than the actual stylus position at that time. The
playback time for "Hold everything" is 865 so its radial distance is
1482.5 + 865 = 2347.5 but the linear velocity is correct at a distance of
2347.5 + 65 = 2412.5. That means that "Hold everything" would have been
recorded at 2347.5/2412.5 or 0.973 times the proper rate. I don't know if
this calculation is based on the correct understanding of the situation
but, nevertheless, I think it shows that skipping around in the original
recording would produces artifacts in the hum tone and, if the skips are
big enough, they should be detectable. It looks like the deviations on
the hum graph are within 1% but that's with measurements of the graph.
Maybe squelching that hum tone wasn't an altogether good thing.
